At 1584×396 the LinkedIn banner is a 4:1 strip — the widest of the common profile banners. It sits directly behind your headline, so it reads as background rather than artwork. The banners that work tend to be quiet: a texture, a muted photograph, a simple brand colour with one line of type.
Mobile crops it narrower
On a phone LinkedIn shows a shallower slice of the banner, closer to 3:1, taken from the centre. Anything positioned at the far left or right — a logo tucked into a corner, text running to the edge — can disappear entirely for mobile visitors. Keep the message within the central band.
Your photo sits on top of it
The circular profile photo overlaps the lower-left of the banner on desktop, and moves toward the centre-left on mobile. That whole lower-left region should stay empty. It is the reason so many otherwise good banners look off-balance: the design was centred, then a face landed on top of it.

Frequently asked questions
- What size is the LinkedIn profile banner?
- 1584×396 pixels — a 4:1 ratio. Company pages use a different, wider image.
- Why does my banner look cut off on mobile?
- Mobile shows a narrower crop taken from the centre, so edge content is trimmed.
- Can I use a photo of myself?
- It rarely works — your profile photo is already there, and the banner is too shallow for a portrait. Landscape or abstract images fare better.
