Animated GIFs: only the first frame is converted.

Convert to

When you want a small, easily shared still out of a GIF, JPG is the lightest option. It takes the first frame and saves it as a compact, photo-style image — ideal for a thumbnail, a preview, or anywhere file size matters more than a transparent background.

Note:only the first frame of an animated GIF is converted — the animation isn't preserved.

When to convert GIF to JPG

  • You need a small still for sharing or email.
  • You want a thumbnail or preview image.
  • The first frame is photographic and size matters.

A note on transparency

JPG has none, so transparent GIF areas are filled with white. For transparency, use GIF to PNG.

Watch out with flat graphics

GIFs hold only 256 colors and often dither them. JPG is tuned for smooth photographic gradients, so on the flat color blocks and dithering typical of a graphic GIF it can leave faint artifacts. If the frame is a photo, JPG is a good fit; if it's a logo or flat graphic, GIF to PNG stays cleaner.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my converted frame look slightly blocky?
JPG compresses flat color areas and dithering less cleanly than photographs. For graphics and logos, convert to PNG instead.
Is the animation kept?
No — you get the first frame as a still JPG.
Why is the background white?
JPG can't store transparency, so transparent areas are flattened to white. Use GIF to PNG to keep them.
Will it be smaller than the GIF?
For a photographic frame, usually yes — JPG compresses it well.
