Pinterest is a vertical feed, and 1000×1500 — a 2:3 ratio — is the shape it is built around. A tall pin simply occupies more of a scrolling column than a square one, which is why the recommended size has stayed vertical while every other platform drifted.
Taller is not always better
Pins longer than roughly 1:2.1 get truncated in the feed, with the bottom hidden behind a tap. That makes 2:3 a deliberate compromise: tall enough to command space, short enough to be shown whole. If your design needs more vertical room, keep the essential part in the top two-thirds.
Text has to survive the thumbnail
Pins are browsed at a fraction of full size, so any type on the image needs to be large and high-contrast. Photographs with a text band across the top or bottom generally hold up better than type laid over a busy picture.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the best Pinterest pin size?
- 1000×1500 pixels, a 2:3 ratio. It fills the vertical feed without being truncated.
- Can I use a square image?
- You can, but it takes up less of the scrolling column, so it competes for attention with a smaller footprint.
- Will my photo be cropped?
- With Cover, a landscape photo loses its sides to reach 2:3. Switch to Contain to keep the whole frame with padding.
