1080 × 1080 px
Fills the frame, crops the overflow.
An Instagram feed post looks best as a 1080×1080 square. Instagram shows feed images in a 1:1 frame, and uploading at exactly that size means your photo stays sharp instead of being re-compressed and cropped unpredictably by the app.
Tips for a clean feed
- Use the same size for every slide of a carousel so they line up.
- Keep the square consistent across posts for a tidy profile grid.
- Leave a little breathing room around faces and text near the edges.
Square, portrait or landscape?
Instagram also allows portrait (4:5) and landscape, but the 1080×1080 square is the most reliable and the classic look. By default the tool fills the square (Cover) and crops the rest; switch to Contain to keep the whole image.

Frequently asked questions
- What size is an Instagram post?
- The square feed post is 1080×1080 pixels. Instagram displays it at 1:1, so matching that size keeps it sharp.
- Why square instead of portrait?
- Portrait (4:5) is allowed and shows up a bit bigger, but the square is the most predictable and the traditional feed look.
- Will my photo be cropped?
- With Cover, a non-square photo is cropped from the centre to fill the frame. Switch to Contain to keep all of it with padding.
