1 MB is the size you pick when you want the file smaller but not damaged. It is the common ceiling for email attachments, forum posts and portfolio uploads, and it is generous enough that a well-exposed photo comes through the process essentially intact.

What survives at 1 MB

At this budget you keep full resolution and most of the fine texture. A 12-megapixel phone photo that started at 5 MB will usually land near 1 MB with differences you have to look for — some softening in noisy shadow areas, and slightly simplified gradients. It is the difference between an archive copy and a very good working copy.

This makes 1 MB the right choice when the image still has work to do: something being sent to a printer, submitted to a stock library, handed to a designer, or kept as the version you will crop from later. Compressing to 100 KB now and needing detail later is not recoverable — the data is gone.

When to go smaller instead

If the image is destined for a web page, 1 MB is more than that job needs and it will show up in load times. Compress those to 200 KB. Keep 1 MB for the cases where a human will look closely, or where something downstream will resize the image again.

Comfortably. Most providers accept 20–25 MB per message, so several 1 MB photos fit in one email without trouble.
Does compressing to 1 MB reduce the resolution?
